Effective August 21, 2015

Smoking ban ordinance 2015-121The City of Denton City Council passed Ordinance No. 2015-121 on April 21, 2015, which prohibits smoking in certain public establishments, including restaurants and bars. Bars that are currently considered “smoking bars” may continue to operate as such until Dec. 31, 2017, at which point all bars must comply with Ordinance No. 2015-121.
 
Ordinance No. 2012-367, passed on December 18, 2012, will remain in place until the new ordinance takes effect.

City of Denton Smoking Ordinance
Effective April 17, 2013
(30-day grace period to May 16, 2013)

The City of Denton City Council passed Ordinance No. 2012-367 on December 18, 2012, which prohibits smoking in certain public establishments. Council appointed a 19-member Ad-hoc Citizen Advisory Committee to advise Council in the development of a comprehensive smoking ban ordinance and to recommend which, if any, exceptions would be included. Council directed the Committee to consider definitions and exceptions with the intent to protect the health and safety of the general public. The Advisory Committee held four meetings from Oct. – Dec. 2012, and made their final recommendation to the City Council on Dec. 11, 2012. After much deliberation and public input, Council passed a comprehensive smoking ordinance on Dec. 18, 2012.

In order to allow businesses to come into compliance with the new ordinance, the City is extending a 30-day grace period from the effective date of April 17, 2013 to May 16, 2013.
