The Denton Police Department has 160 sworn police officers and 67 civilian employees. In 1989, the department implemented Community Policing and utilizes this philosophy in providing services to the community. The employees of the organization are provided opportunities for personal growth and professional development through empowerment to work with citizens to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Innovative programs, such as the bicycle patrol unit, have provided the department national recognition. For example, in 1992, the National League of Cities presented our department with the Award of Excellence for Innovative Programming, making our agency the only police department to be given such recognition.

As you consider employment with a police department, we encourage you to compare all the benefits each agency offers. In addition to the beginning base salary and top pay, these include the provision of equipment, take-home cars, longevity and incentive pay, promotional and lateral transfer opportunities, and retirement packages. For example, the City of Denton pays both the City's portion and all but 2% of the employee's contribution to the retirement program. The department issues officers protective vests and, if eligible, a take-home car. Officers can earn additional pay for levels of certification or education, up to $180.00 per month for a Master's Peace Officer Certification or Master's Degree. The City of Denton also reimburses 80% of the employee's tuition at an accredited college or university and Denton provides three institutions, Texas Woman's University, the University of North Texas, and North Central Texas College, for those seeking to further their formal education without the inconvenience of a lengthy commute.
