Cigarette Litter Prevention
Put Cigarette Litter in Its Place
Cigarette butt litter is the Number 1 most littered item in the U.S. Since 2007, Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) has implemented Keep America Beautiful's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) to raise public awareness of the problem of cigarette butt litter, and actively reduce litter in the Denton community. The butt stops here!

Help Remove Cigarette Litter From Our Community
Throughout the year, KDB cleans up cigarette butts and maintains cigarette receptacles in an effort to keep our city clean. We cannot do it alone and rely on hard-working volunteers to end cigarette litter in our community. These cleanup days are scheduled every couple of months and take place around the Downtown Square and Fry street areas.
Once per quarter, KDB conducts a cigarette litter scan along designated routes where receptacles have been installed counting and collecting littered cigarette butts to measure the effect receptacles are making in the reduction of cigarette litter.
Contact KDB Staff to find out about upcoming cleanup dates and how you can volunteer, today.
Free Ashtrays & Education Materials
Keep America Beautiful grant funding has provided free pocket and auto ashtrays. Additionally, free education materials including window clings encouraging pedestrians to identify and use the closest cigarette receptacle, and bumper stickers to promote keeping cigarette litter in the vehicle until a trash bin can be used are also available to individuals and businesses.
To request ashtrays or educational supplies for personal use or to provide for free to patrons at your business, contact the KDB Program and Volunteer Coordinator.
Funding & Focus
KDB's focus for $5,000 in 2019 to 2020 grant funding is commercial areas including Downtown Denton and the Fry Street area, where preliminary results are showing an average 47% reduction in cigarette litter following a series of cleanups, the installation of permanent ash receptacles throughout Downtown and around Fry Street, and an ongoing social marketing campaign.
