Denton Small Business Profile
In economic development, we see small business owners in Denton hustling to make their business into something they can be proud of and share with their families. It's not just a way to express themselves or provide for themselves, but a way to contribute to the community they call home. In this new series, we hope to share some of the fantastic small businesses located here and help you get to know the entrepreneurs that make Denton a great place to call home.
To start this new Denton Small Business Profile series, we celebrate Black History Month by spotlighting black-owned businesses in our community. We encourage you to make time to visit them and experience what makes Denton, well, Denton!
This week's profile is Chrysalis Clothing Gallery.
Have you been to the modern women’s attire and accessories store on E. McKinney Street called Chrysalis Clothing Gallery? Shellion Reid opened the retail store to help women find their capacity for creative and fabulous self-expression through clothing and accessories while introducing people to an empowering and personal shopping experience.
Shellion chose Denton for her business because it has been her home since she moved to Texas seven years ago. She and her husband immediately fell in love with the people, the community, and the culture. Denton manages to achieve the difficult balance of small-town charm, engaged and progressive citizenry, and openness to growth.
At Chrysalis Clothing Gallery, success is not measured in dollars and cents. It’s measured in the experiences you’re able to create and the personal growth you can accomplish in yourself and with others. The retail space is designed to be warm and inviting. Shellion is more interested in getting to know you and making you feel comfortable than pushing products. Clients are welcome whether they are looking for something specific or need to lounge on the couch and chat.
Juneteenth is one event that Shellion looks forward to each year because it’s such an important part of history for Texas and the nation. It’s a reminder that even when much is accomplished, there is always more to be done by continuing the work of education, self-reflection, and meaningful engagement. She shares that, “Black history is about so much more than “how many uses for the peanut George Washington Carver discovered.” It’s about continuing the sometimes-challenging conversations and doing so with respect, honesty, and vulnerability.”
For small businesses in Denton, Chrysalis Clothing Gallery has been so blessed by the community’s creativity and collaborative spirit. Shellion looks forward to doing more to demonstrate what it looks like when you have an affirmative business community. To businesses considering Denton, the diversity and connectedness of Denton residents are your greatest resource.
