DENTON, TX, Mar. 6, 2022 – The Denton Fire Department (DFD) received a call for a Structure Fire near the corner of E. Sherman Drive and Wellington today at 1:55 p.m. The house is a single-family dwelling located in the 2300 block of Royal Acres.
A DFD fire engine and ambulance were on scene in 2 minutes and reported heavy smoke conditions on the backside of the house. A neighbor told arriving crews that a car belonging to the owner was present and that the owner should be in the house.
Upon entry fire crews were met with an extensive amount of piled contents in the house, making fire attack and searching extremely difficult. A male victim in his sixties was found in a back bedroom that had heavy smoke conditions but no active fire. He was pulled from the house and CPR was started by DFD crews. He was transported with lights and sirens to a local hospital and arrived there in critical/grave condition with a pulse.
DFD fire investigators were called and an initial investigation began. Because of the critical condition of the victim, the Denton County Arson Task Force was called in to have an independent investigation of the scene. As it stands, the cause appears to be accidental in nature.
An update on the fire cause and condition of the victim will be released tomorrow afternoon.
