[ARCHIVED] Adapted Rec Bring Recreation to All

Adapted and Inclusive Recreation, or AIR, is the City’s Parks and Recreation program for individuals with physical, intellectual, and emotional disabilities. All programs are designed with a range of abilities in mind and have equipment and instruction for all needs. Want to compete or learn a new sport? We have our own Special Olympics team. Not competitive but want to work on your skills? Our Sport and Fitness program tries a new sport or exercise routine every week, like tennis, golf, and step aerobics. Do you want more knowledge on nutrition, portion size, exercise plans, and general wellness? AIR Health and Wellness is a 16-week program that combines education with exercise. Are you good at creating and expressing yourself? Arts and Crafts include everything from painting to making soap and candles. We have Social Connections and Dances monthly, so there is always a chance to kick back and hang out with your friends. With a wide offering of programs, there is something for everyone.

Parks and Recreation has special equipment for individuals with disabilities to participate in a variety of programs. The GRIT Freedom Chair is an all-terrain wheelchair that can be used for hiking, parks, and camping programs. The Freedom Chair can be checked out for programs, or taken for a spin on the Wildflower Trail at North Lakes Park. The Assault Runner is a self-propelled treadmill, meaning the user sets the pace with how fast they move. This is a great option for individuals that have abnormal gait to get indoor cardio. Keep an eye out for more adaptive equipment being added, and if you need accommodation for any program, just ask!
