DENTON, TX, April 24, 2023 – Darontay Dashield, 31, is in custody for Murder following an investigation into the January death of 43-year-old Cory Johnson.
At 10:18 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, officers responded to a call concerning multiple gunshots heard at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Eagle Drive. During a search of the area, officers located an apartment door that was slightly ajar. Officers called out to any potential occupants and heard someone inside asking for help.
In the apartment, officers located a male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers began life-saving measures on the victim before he was transported to a hospital. The victim, later identified as Johnson, was pronounced deceased that night.
Witnesses reported seeing a male running through the apartment complex immediately following Johnson’s murder. Further witness interviews, physical evidence, and digital evidence led detectives to Dashield, a Denton resident.
Detectives learned that Dashield knew the victim and had previously stayed in his residence. Over the course of the investigation, detectives determined Dashield was at Johnson’s apartment at the time of the murder.
On Monday afternoon, Dashield was arrested in the 500 block of Robertson Street. He is currently in the City of Denton Jail, with bail not yet set.
