Cinco de Mayo is a celebration that commemorates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 over the Second French Empire. The Mexican army was smaller than the Second French army; therefore the 3-year victory provided encouragement, pride, and unity. While the holiday is not observed as a national holiday in Mexico, the schools are closed; yet, Cinco de Mayo is a state holiday in the State of Puebla.
In 1863, the first Cinco de Mayo was celebrated in California. President Franklin Roosevelt created the “Good Neighborhood Policy” in 1933 which improved relations with Latin American Countries and increased the Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States.
Today, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration that focuses on Mexican- American culture and heritage in the United States. Celebrations share the culture through food, music, traditional dance, hobbies, and educational materials.
