North Lakes Park Librada "Lily" Cantu Inclusive Playground Project

City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022, which prioritizes the development of an inclusive playground within the City. In light of this, the Librada "Lily" Cantu Playground - a current 2-5 & 5-12 playground at North Lakes Park has been identified as the ideal location for a brand-new destination all-inclusive park, which will attract visitors from across the region.

All-inclusive playground projects provide numerous benefits for children of all abilities, including those with disabilities. By incorporating accessible play equipment, surfaces, and sensory elements, all children can participate in outdoor play activities, promoting socialization, physical activity, and cognitive development. In addition, all-inclusive playgrounds promote inclusivity, helping to break down barriers and create a more welcoming and accepting community for everyone. Overall, all-inclusive playground projects provide an opportunity to promote healthy and active lifestyles while promoting equity and inclusion. The new playground design will be 'barrier free'. It will feature areas of play offering universal design features for all abilities, physical and mentally such as rehabilitation equipment, nature-based, and experiences for children and adults of all abilities.

On April 18, 2023, City Council took an exciting step forward in Strengthening the Community and Quality of Life by approving a Professional Services Agreement with Mesa Design Associates, Inc. The agreement secures professional design services for the eagerly anticipated North Lakes Park Librada "Lily" Cantu Inclusive Playground project.

Parks and Recreation staff and Mesa Design Inc. will kick off this project this month and begin to identify a timeline for the success of this project. In addition, a focus group will be established to help shape the vision of the playground, and the first public meeting is scheduled for late summer/early fall. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting project, as we look forward to making the North Lakes Park Lily Cantu Inclusive Playground a reality for all community members to enjoy.
