If you have visited Sequoia Park recently you have noticed sidewalk connections to the neighborhood, a new play structure, and a pavilion. The sidewalk connections and playground amenities are part of Phase 1 of the overall improvement plan for the park. This phase was funded by a Community Development Block Grant for $175,000. The sidewalk is ADA compliant and the playground is designed for children ages 2-5 years old.
Phase 2 of the project is also funded by a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $208,800 and will consist of a second play structure for children ages 5-12 years old and the recently completed pavilion.
The pavilion has 4 picnic tables and a cover grill located on an accessible hard surface. Construction of the playground is anticipated to begin in late summer and be completed in the fall. These park improvements were a result of community meetings with the neighborhood a few years ago to kick off planning efforts.
The Sequoia Park playground is the 29th playground to be constructed within the park system. A park metric of playground per resident ratio is set at a goal of 1 playground per 5,000 residents. Based on the 2022 population of 154,200 and 29 playgrounds that set Denton at a 1 to 5,317 residents ratio, slightly above our goal.
