On July 6, construction began on new tee boxes at the Creekside disc golf course at North Lakes Park. A total of (18) 12’ circular tees are being installed to replace the small, rectangular tee boxes. The old tees were limited in the ability to move the hole around to provide course variety. By installing circular tee boxes, the players are no longer restricted to where the pins are aligned. In addition, the new tees allow players to address the fairway in different angles to strategically play the hole.
On August 7, 2021, a new (18) hole disc golf course was dedicated with temporary tees recycled from the driving range golf mats. Parks and Recreation had been exploring opportunities for another course location, but volunteers were able to design and help build a second course strategically using the existing park space.
Local disc golf volunteers often assist with minor maintenance improvements, programming, and special events. The extra hours of service help sustain maintenance, and make sure that the venue is suitable for the play. The courses at North Lakes Park are heavily utilized by the community as well as disc golf enthusiasts from around North Texas.
The two North Lakes Park disc golf courses, located on the north side of Denton, are best known for their open space and lake setting. The courses are open to the public and free to play from 6am to 10pm. The game provides a great opportunity for outdoor recreation, exercise, and socializing with fellow disc golf enthusiasts. Disc golf is a sport like traditional golf, but instead of using clubs and balls, players use various types of plastic discs and throw them into disc golf baskets.
North Lakes Park also offers other amenities, including picnic areas, dog park, athletic fields, playgrounds, hiking trails, and a lake for fishing. A new tennis center is set to open this summer with an official dedication planned for October 14, 2023. For more information on park improvements go to: Discuss Denton – Park and Recreation Projects.
