August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day and the best way to celebrate is by honoring a senior in your life. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed August 21, 1988, as the first National Senior Citizen's Day. He wrote "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older…"
There are so many people around us that have spent their lives paving the way for what the world is today. We would not be here if it weren't for the hard work and dedication of our wiser community members. Take a moment and think of one person you could celebrate for their years of service and life accomplishments. Here are a few ways to engage and show that you care for our community's senior citizens:
- Reach out to older family members or neighbors - Sometimes just picking up the phone to call or text can make someone's day.
- Stop by the Denton Senior Center Craft & Gift Store to check out the handmade items made by local seniors.
- Treat yourself - Denton Parks and Rec invites anyone 50 and better to enjoy an ice cream treat for all that living you've been doing. Come and go between 12-1 p.m. outside the Denton Senior Center and get a tasty treat
