On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Denton City Council gave unanimous direction to a concept and request for a campus expansion to house staff and operations of Denton Municipal Electric (DME). While only in the preliminary stages of development, DME staff expect that the campus expansion will be constructed at its current Spencer Road location.
DME, Denton’s 100% renewable public power provider, anticipates that the campus expansion will incorporate sustainable features, while preserving much of the trees and natural landscape on the site.
“This project provides the opportunity to incorporate a lot of unique sustainable features into the design,” said Tony Puente, General Manager of DME. “We are very proud of how well we perform now, and this would be a positive next step for enhanced service delivery for the Denton community.”
A campus expansion will allow for the relocation of staff into spaces that will allow for more efficient and effective service delivery by reducing time needed for collaboration and coordination, provide space for vehicle and equipment storage, and allow Customer Service operations onsite in a location that is easy for customers to access. A new campus positions DME and the City of Denton for the future as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.
Currently, DME facilities are expected to be at 110% utilization within five years, and staff is spread between four separate buildings. Additionally, there is limited space for equipment and supply storage, and a small lineman training area.
The campus expansion also includes increased security at the site and will allow for additional space needed for supplies and equipment as DME continues to provide reliable power and prepare for Denton’s future growth.
As currently planned, three of four buildings would be removed from the site, and the fourth building, the Engineering and Operations building which was constructed in 2012, would be repurposed to meet other department needs.
