Budget Focuses on Efficient Services While Planning Toward Future Growth and Opportunities

DENTON, TX, Sept. 26, 2023 – At its June 26 meeting, the Denton City Council adopted its Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-24 budget and tax rate, demonstrating its commitment to fiscal responsibility, efficient service delivery, and community well-being.

Through ongoing efforts to enhance services and manage costs, the City of Denton adopted a tax rate that remains unchanged in the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The current rate of $0.560682 per $100 valuation. Additionally, Denton utility customers can expect no changes to utility rates for electric, water, and solid waste services, helping to provide stability in utility expenses. To support vital infrastructure projects on the horizon, wastewater rates will experience an 11% increase. This equates to less than a $3.50 per month impact for the average customer and marks the first utility rate increase in seven years. These necessary adjustments will help maintain and improve Denton's wastewater systems, ensuring long-term sustainability.

The FY 2023-24 budget prioritizes core services, including public safety, water services, recreation services, and road maintenance, to meet the growing needs of the Denton community. This budget also includes a number of service enhancements such as:

  • Public Safety: The addition of three (3) Police Department personnel and six (12) Fire Department personnel to enhance public safety services.
  • Downtown Vitality: The implementation of the Ambassador Pilot Program to promote downtown Denton's vibrancy and growth.
  • Utility Customer Support: The addition of six (6) Customer Service personnel to better assist the community with their utility services and questions.
  • Employer of Choice: Funding allocated for employee merit increases to enable the City to be an employer of choice and attract the best individuals to serve our residents.
  • Street Improvements: A significant focus on streets with $25,743,949 budgeted in the Street Improvement Fund.

"Denton continues to be a city that values progress and community growth. This budget demonstrates our dedication to enhancing the services and experiences of our residents," said Mayor Hudspeth. “We are investing in critical infrastructure while managing our tax rate to provide a high quality of life for our community."
