[ARCHIVED] City of Denton Residents Invited to Provide Input on Council Redistricting

Denton placeholder

Public Input Opportunity Open through Dec. 7, 2021.

DENTON, TX, Oct. 28, 2021 – The City of Denton has opened a public input opportunity for residents to submit comments or proposals as the City Council considers redrawing its districts. Residents can learn more about the redistricting process and submit their input by visiting www.cityofdenton.com/redistricting.

After every Census, the City Council reviews population data to determine if the four Council district boundaries should be updated to maintain population balance between each district. After reviewing the 2020 Census results as analyzed by a third-party consultant, the City Council will proceed with a redistricting process and potentially redraw Council district boundaries according to redistricting criteria adopted on Oct. 26, 2021.

The redistricting criteria, addressing issues such as compactness of districts and population balance, serves as a framework to guide the redistricting process. The criteria helps the City Council evaluate and measure proposed plans and assist the city in complying with state and federal law.

Any comments or proposed redistricting plans submitted by members of the public should adhere to submittal guidelines that are available on the redistricting webpage. These guidelines address how submissions should be formatted and what information, at a minimum, proposed plans should include.

The City Council expects to hold a drawing session during a City Council meeting on Nov. 16, 2021, after which any draft redistricting plans will be made available for public comment. A public hearing is expected to be held on Dec. 7, 2021, with any changes to City Council districts being formally adopted on Dec. 14, 2021. Any City Council district changes, if adopted, are expected to be in place before the candidate filing period opens in mid-January for the May 2022 municipal elections.
