[ARCHIVED] City Announces Temporary Facility Closures Due to COVID-19

Microscope view of COVID-19 virus.

DENTON, TX, Dec. 29, 2021 – To protect the health and safety of the community and our employees, Recreation Centers and Libraries will be closed beginning at 5 p.m. on Dec. 29 due to an increase in COVID-19 cases among City staff. The Recreation Centers and Libraries are tentatively scheduled to reopen on Jan. 6, 2022.

Previously, the Animal Shelter closed on Dec. 27 also due to COVID-19 cases among staff. The Animals Shelter is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Jan. 5, 2022.

Recreation Centers
During this time, recreation centers designated as warming stations will be open for that purpose should temperatures reach the freezing point during normal business hours, but no programming, facility rentals, or recreation activities will be permitted. However, the Holiday Camp for children, whose parents rely on this service, will continue at the Civic Center or until further notice. Staff will work to facilitate refunds as needed.

Libraries
During this time, libraries designated as warming stations will be open for that purpose should temperatures reach the freezing point during normal business hours, but no programming or library services will be permitted. Curbside service will not be available, but patrons can return books through each library’s book drop. Holds will remain available for pick up for seven days after the library reopens.

Animal Shelter
During this time, Animal Service officers will continue to work in the facility in a limited capacity to provide essential City services, and officers will respond to emergency field calls only. An “emergency” in relation to animal services should be considered an immediate threat to the public or to the animal: animal hit by a car, animal bite, a rabid animal having contact with humans or animals, or a vicious dog.

These facility closures are intended to maintain the integrity of our staffing and the ability to provide core services to the community. The City will continue to evaluate this fluid situation and continued closures will be reevaluated early next week.
