Assistant Chief Bobby Smith joined the Denton Police Department as a police officer in 1994. His career started off as a patrol officer where he served for nine years. During that time, his duties also included field training officer, police instructor, and tactical unit (SWAT) officer. In 2004, Smith was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he served in several capacities including patrol, training, investigations, and tactical unit team leader. Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2014 and served as a patrol shift commander until being promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police in July 2018.
Assistant Chief Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of North Texas and a Master of Science in criminal justice leadership and management from Sam Houston State University. He is a graduate of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership Command College. Assistant Chief Smith is a United States Marine Corps veteran.
