In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (“ADA”), as amended, the City of Denton (“City”) will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities based on a disability in its services, programs, or activities.

Aids or Services for Effective Communication: The City of Denton will generally, upon request, provide appropriate aids and services leading to effective communication for qualified individuals with disabilities so they can participate equally in the City of Denton’s programs, services, and activities, including qualified sign language interpreters, documents in Braille, and other ways of making information and communications accessible to individuals who have speech, hearing, or vision impairments.

Modifications to Policies and Procedures: The City of Denton may, upon request, make reasonable modifications to its policies and procedures to ensure that qualified individuals with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all the City’s programs, services, and activities.  For example, qualified individuals with service animals will be welcome in City of Denton offices under most circumstances, even where pets are generally prohibited.

  • Requesting an Accommodation
    Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of our policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity for the City of Denton should contact the City of Denton ADA Coordinators (listed below) as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.

    The ADA does not require the City of Denton to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.

    The City of Denton will not place a surcharge on an individual with a disability, or any group of individuals with disabilities, to provide a reasonably accommodating auxiliary aid, service, or modification of a policy, such as retrieving items from locations that are open to the public but are not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.

    Complaints that a program, service, or activity of the City of Denton is not equally accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to the ADA Coordinators:

  • Grievance Procedure
    The City of Denton has established a grievance procedure in compliance with the ADA that may be used by anyone who wishes to file a complaint alleging disability discrimination in the provision of services, activities, programs, or benefits.
    A complaint may be submitted by using the form referenced in the Grievance Procedures.

  • Committee on Persons with Disabilities
    The Committee on Persons with Disabilities is an 11-person advisory board that was established on October 23, 2018, by a resolution of the City of Denton City Council.

    The duty of the Committee on Persons with Disabilities is to advise the City in areas of Committee interest, including, but not limited to, disability concerns such as accessibility and accommodations for City projects and activities. All recommendations shall be made by a majority vote of a quorum of the Committee.

    City projects and activities may include the following:
    • Construction of new and repairing existing sidewalks, ramps, and crosswalk features;
    • The creation of an ADA Transition Plan;
    • The planning and development of an adaptive/handicap accessible park;
    • Provide guidance on incorporating new or enhanced signage at the City facilities;
    • Advise on improvements for new and existing City facilities;
    • Provide input on parking lot rehabilitation projects;
    • Provide input for improving City operations; and
    • Provide input for improving the operations of other entities.

    The Committee meets at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the City Council Work Session Room at City Hall, 215 E. McKinney St. Information on upcoming meetings, past agendas, and meeting recordings can be found at www.cityofdenton.com/publicmeetings.
