Phase 2 (South Fork to Loop 288)

Phase 1 (Grissom to South Fork)

Project Background

The East McKinney Street project will increase capacity, improve pedestrian safety, and address aging utilities in the area. East McKinney Street will widen from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane urban roadway with a continuous center turn lane from Loop 288 to Grissom Road. Phase One includes the installation of a new storm drain and roadway widening to four lanes, with a continuous center turn lane from Grissom Road west to South Fork. Phase Two includes widening the roadway to four lanes from Loop 288 to South Fork with a continuous center turn lane. A mixed use path will be installed on the north side of both phases and a sidewalk will be installed on the south side. Street light improvements will also be installed in both phases.

Project Updates

March 30: Construction Update 🚧 Tune in to hear from project manager Trevor Crain about progress on the East McKinney Street Widening Project.

March 10: Phase 2 construction activities are underway. Utility work, including drainage improvements, are continuing to progress. Motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling in the area and adhere to all posted construction signage along the project route. The current construction activities projected completion date is Q2 2022. 

December 11: Crews are continuing utility work along McKinney Street from South Fork to Grissom, and are expected to be complete on or before June 2021. An updated timeline will be provided in a future project update.

October 27: Phase 2 (South Fork to Grissom) of the East Mckinney Street project is actively in construction. Phase 2 consists of expanding the roadway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes with a continuous center lane. This phase also includes new storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water distribution mains, a sidewalk and mixed use path to Grissom Road. Utility relocations currently being completed by Atmos Energy.  

June 12
: The East McKinney Street widening project is ahead of schedule, and traffic will shift to the north side of the street soon. See a video update from the project manager here.

December 12: Construction of Phase Two commenced with a 750 day construction schedule.  Anticipated completion of Phase Two is January 2022.

November 19: The Denton City Council awarded the East McKinney Phase Two roadway Widening Project to Jagoe Pubilc.  

November 13: The City of Denton will hold an Informational Public Meeting on Thursday, November 21 regarding the McKinney Street Widening Capital Improvement Project Phase II from Loop 288 to S. Fork Road.  

The public meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St., Denton, TX 76201. Free parking is available in the lot located directly in front of the Civic Center. 
November 13: Phase I, consisting of the widening of McKinney Street from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway with a continuous left turn lane from S. Fork Road to Grissom Road, is substantially complete. The sidewalk and mixed-use path are in construction and are the final improvements to complete this phase of the project. 

Construction for Phase II of the project is tentatively scheduled to begin in December 2019. Weather conditions and contractor scheduling may impact the plans, but the project is targeted for completion in November 2021. This phase of the improvement project will widen McKinney Street from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane urban roadway with continuous left turn lanes from Loop 288 to S. Fork Road.
