Project Status:



Currently, crews are preparing to begin street reconstruction on Hickory Street from Welch Street to Carroll Boulevard. During construction, lanes of Hickory Street will be temporarily closed to traffic in phases. Detailed lane closure information is forthcoming. Signage will be posted to alert motorists of the temporary closure and detour route in place. 

Project Background

The reconstruction of Hickory Street (Bonnie Brae to Carroll) is expected to be complete by summer 2021. The project includes upgrading the roadway, water, wastewater, gas, and electric utilities in the area, which will result in a corridor that will last for the next 40 years.


Project Updates
 
August 28: Weather permitting, message boards and traffic control signage is scheduled to be in place no later than Monday, Aug. 31 to notify community members and motorists of the upcoming construction. Utility work is actively being completed in the area by Atmos Energy, and includes a temporary lane closure from Welch Street to Bernard Street. Following the completion of the utility work, the City’s contractor, 2L Construction LLC., is scheduled to begin street construction on W. Hickory Street (N. Welch Street to Bernard Street) mid September.

August 5: The final phase of the Hickory Street project includes street reconstruction, improved pedestrian access and sidewalk reconstruction along both sides of the street with pedestrian lighting along the north side, and maintaining a bike lane with a buffer along the south side of W. Hickory Street between Welch Street and Carroll Boulevard.  

Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to begin on W. Hickory Street (N. Welch to Carroll Boulevard) August 31 and continue through June 2021. During construction, lanes of W. Hickory Street will be temporarily closed to traffic in phases. Access will be maintained for local residents and property owners throughout the temporary lane closures. Detailed lane closure information will be shared to impacted residents and property owners in advance.

February 10: With two phases of the Hickory Street project (Avenue B to Fry Street and Fry Street to Welch Street) completed. The final phase (Welch Street to Carroll Boulevard) is scheduled to begin construction in June 2020. This final phase includes street reconstruction, improved pedestrian access and sidewalk reconstruction along both sides of the street with pedestrian lighting along the north side, and maintaining a bike lane with a buffer along the south side of W. Hickory Street between Welch Street and Carroll Boulevard. This phase is scheduled to be complete by June 2021.

October 31: Crews recently completed street reconstruction from Fry Street to Welch Street. Designs are nearly complete for improvements to continue from Welch Street to Carroll Boulevard, including pedestrian access improvements and street reconstruction.

August 19: Drainage and street improvements were recently completed on Hickory Street from Avenue B to Fry Street. Crews are now completing street reconstruction from Fry Street to Welch Street. To allow crews to safely complete the improvements, Hickory Street from Fry Street to Welch Street will be temporarily closed to traffic. Signage is posted to alert motorists of the temporary closure and detour in place.

June 12: Crews began street reconstruction from Avenue B to Fry Street and wastewater main replacement at the intersection of Fry Street. To allow crews to safely complete the improvements, a section of Hickory Street from Avenue B to Fry Street will be temporarily closed.

March 7: The Streets Department recently completed Phase III of the project from Avenue C to Avenue B. Completed improvements to date include:
  • Sewer and utility improvements from Bonnie Brae Street to N. Carroll Boulevard
  • Full street reconstruction from Bonnie Brae Street to Avenue B. Due to the deteriorating condition of the the street, improvements have been made to stabilize the subgrade and new asphalt has been paved.
  • Curb and gutter repairs. Crews removed failed sections of the curb and installed new concrete.
As crews continue to complete the improvements, please use caution when traveling in the area and expect potential delays.

A public meeting is scheduled for the Hickory Street project to update residents and property owners on the past, current, and future phases of this project. Staff will be available to discuss the project and answer questions. For more information, view the public information notice here.
