Construction for Phase One of the project began July 2019 and is now substantially complete. This phase included the installation of a new storm drain and roadway widening to four lanes, with a continuous center turn lane from Grissom Road west to South Fork. Phase Two began on December 12, 2019 and includes widening the roadway to four lanes from Loop 288 to South Fork with a continuous center turn lane. A mixed use path will be installed on the north side of both phases and a sidewalk will be installed on the south side. Street light improvements will also be installed in both phases.
The McKinney Street capital improvement program project will increase capacity, improve pedestrian safety, and address aging utilities in the area. McKinney Street will widen from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane urban roadway with a continuous center turn lane from Loop 288 to Grissom Road.

Construction of Phase Two commenced with a 750 day construction schedule. Anticipated completion of Phase Two is January 2022.

November 13: The City of Denton will hold an Informational Public Meeting
on Thursday, November 21
regarding the McKinney Street Widening Capital Improvement Project Phase II from Loop 288 to S. Fork Road.
The public meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St., Denton, TX 76201
. Free parking is available in the lot located directly in front of the Civic Center.
Phase I, consisting of the widening of McKinney Street from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway with a continuous left turn lane from S. Fork Road to Grissom Road, is substantially complete. The sidewalk and mixed-use path are in construction and are the final improvements to complete this phase of the project.
Construction for Phase II of the project is tentatively scheduled to begin in December 2019. Weather conditions and contractor scheduling may impact the plans, but the project is targeted for completion in November 2021. This phase of the improvement project will widen McKinney Street from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane urban roadway with continuous left turn lanes from Loop 288 to S. Fork Road.
