2014 Bond Program

In 2014, Denton voters approved a bond program for street improvements, public safety facilities, stormwater drainage and flood control improvements, and park system improvements.



  • Proposition 1: Street Improvements
    Authorized the issuance of $61,710,000 in bonds for the purpose of construction, reconstruction, restructuring and extending streets, roadways, and other traffic an transportation facilities, including the purchase of land to support these improvements. The proposition also included up to $30,000 for the installation of related public art.

  • Proposition 2: Public Safety Facilities

    Authorized the issuance of $16,565,000 of bonds for the purpose of constructing, reconstructing, renovating, improving, expanding, equipping, and furnishing public safety facilities for the Police and Fire Departments.  The proposition also included up to $325,000 for the installation of related public art.

  • Proposition 3: Stormwater Drainage & Flood Control Improvements
    Authorized the issuance of $8,545,000 of bonds for the purpose of constructing, reconstructing, restructuring, and installing, stormwater drainage and flood control improvements; related utility relocation and bridge and street modifications or removal; and the purchase of land, as necessary, to support these improvements.

         Creation of separate storm drain to carry stormwater runoff to Pecan Creek

    Pecan Creek Drainage Improvements (Phase 2)
         Design and construction of drainage Improvements from Locus Street to Prairie Street

    South Bell Avenue Drainage System

  • Proposition 4: Park System Improvements

    Authorized the issuance of $11,335,000 of bonds for the purpose of constructing, reconstructing, renovating, improving, expanding and equipping park improvements, including beautification, trails, athletic fields, water parks, swimming pools, park buildings, and recreation facilities; up to $180,000 of such principal amount for acquiring, constructing, and installing public art related to and being part of some or all of the foregoing; and the purchase of land, as necessary, to support these improvements.

         Renovation and expansion of the Tennis Center

    Water Works Park Additions 
         Construction of wave pool, concession facilities, and shade structures
         Status: Completed
    Vela Soccer Complex (Phase 2) 
         Renovation of soccer and athletics complex at North Lakes Park
         Status: Under Construction
    Southwest Park Master Plan
         Funding for a master plan for the development of Southwest Park
         Status: Under Procurement
    Property Acquisition  
         Funding for new park land purchases within the City
         Status: Planning
    Playground Replacements 
         Replacement of playground structures at seven parks.
         Status: Under Procurement
    Parks Improvements 
         Various parks improvements including lighting and facilities enhancements
         Status: Under Design
    Trail System Expansion and Addition
         Expansions to offroad pedestrian trail network
         Status: Project completed with 2005 funding (2014 bond funding diverted to Tennis Center)
    Sprayground 
         Construction of a small/medium splash park
         Status: Completed
    Public Art 
         Public art installations related to the above park system improvements.
         Status: Two of Five Planned Projects are Complete

BOND PROGRAM COMPLETION STATUS

The 2014 Bond Program includes the reconstruction of major roadway sections, the reconstruction of Fire Station #4 and a Fire Training Facility, numerous drainage improvements, and recreation facility improvements to the Tennis Center, G. Roland Vela Athletic Complex, and numerous playground installations. While a sizable building program, the City has made significant progress with the diverse project list. In two years’ time, the 2014 bond program has moved from nine percent to 55 percent complete.
