The City of Denton is developing an Area Plan for neighborhoods surrounding the University of North Texas campus to help guide anticipated growth and investment over the next 20 years. The area is home to one of the largest universities in Texas, two of the City of Denton’s most historic neighborhoods, as well as a variety of commercial and residential uses.

The planning issues facing such a varied area are complex, and one size does not fit all. The planning team will spend the next several months collecting data, as well as working with property owners and stakeholders to obtain community input.  A community workshop to provide initial input and direction for the plan was held in February, with the first open house tentatively scheduled for April to allow for feedback on the draft vision and early recommendations for the plan.  A final open house will be scheduled in June to review draft plan recommendations for needed adjustments prior to beginning the adoption process.  Public Hearings for the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council consideration of the plan are targeted for Summer 2018.

The result of the year-long community discussion will be a set of planning recommendations tailored to the many different types of neighborhoods and developments that exist and are desired in the area. The intended purpose of the plan is to:
•    Enhance neighborhoods
•    Preserve historic assets
•    Guide appropriate infill development
•    Accommodate traffic—vehicles, bike, and pedestrian—to and through the area
•    Address parking needs

Provide Input
In case you missed the Oak Gateway Area Plan community workshop and would like to engage in the planning process, please see the presentation, workshop maps, and exhibits below. The presentation, maps, and exhibits will give you an insight into the topics discussed at the workshop (e.g., mobility solutions, parking solutions, housing type, and more). The City is still seeking input from the community, please complete the following survey: Oak Gateway Area Plan Survey

And if you have additional comments send them to Ron Menguita, the City of Denton’s Long Range Planning Administrator, at Ron.Menguita@cityofdenton.com.
