G. Roland Vela Athletic Complex

Project Status

Construction at the Vela Athletic Complex in North Lakes Park continues to progress. New sod has been laid and a new playground consisting of slides, swings, and numerous other play features are also ready to go. In early 2019, work began on the concession/restroom facility, and the target date for completion is May 2019.

Project Background

The G. Roland Vela Athletic Complex will be Denton's new soccer complex named for G. Roland Vela, a retired University of North Texas professor and former City Council member. The complex is expected to open in March with four fenced and lighted adult size multi- purpose athletic fields, a parking lot, playground, pavilion, and a restroom and concessions building. The complex is funded primarly through voter approved bond packages, park dedication funds, and general funds.
