Road and Utility Projects

Road and utility projects make up the majority of the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP), but the CIP also includes regular upgrades, maintenance, and replacements. To maintain the overall health of our transportation and utility infrastructure network, existing roads and underground utility systems have to be reconstructed or replaced when they reach the end of their useful life. The projects listed below are the ongoing and upcoming projects that you can expect throughout 2019. Detour maps are included for planned projects that will require a complete street closure. All project schedules and time lines are subject to change.

Street construction to improve the condition of Amherst Drive from Fordham to Malone is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020. Signage will be posted to alert motorists of temporary closures and parking restrictions.

Atlas Drive
This improvement project requires streets, water, and wastewater improvements. Work is underway to reconstruct the wastewater main from Redstone to Hercules. Before wastewater pipe defects cause significant wastewater flow restrictions, they are replaced with a new, strong plastic pipe.  You may see crews work in an open trench, lowering each pipe segment into place, or you may also see them operate a “pipe bursting” machine, which drags new pipe in through a small pit while increasing the size of the pipe channel.  When the process is done, you will have a brand-new pipe with decades of use ahead.
