Senior Programs

Denton Parks and Rec offers health, fitness, and recreation programs for adults ages 50+. We encourage you to explore what we offer and fit some fun into your schedule!

    art on the go!
    We move to motivate you through art by visiting museums, galleries, and art studios. We'll offer a brief overview of the exhibits and the artists prior to each adventure. Cost includes transportation and admission to each venue; Dutch-treat lunch. The registration deadline is one week prior to each trip. We'll meet at 9 a.m. in the orange room at Denton Senior Center on Bell Ave.

  • ​Active Adult Adventures!
    time for an Adventure!

    All adventures start and finish at Denton Senior Center on Bell Ave. Outdoor and indoor classes or trips are for adults 50+ unless otherwise noted. They are managed by our in-house rec coordinator who specializes in outdoor recreation. If you have adventure specific questions, please call (940) 349-7784. No experience is required.

    Kayaking, ages 50+
    Join American Canoe Association assessed instructor and lifeguard certified staff on a kayak adventure. Paddling experience is not required. Fee includes transportation, instructors and guides, sit on top kayaks, life jackets, paddles and kayak instruction. Bring sunscreen, sack lunch, and water.

    Greenbelt Bike Ride, ages 50+
    Enjoy a leisurely 6.5 mile, 13 mile, or 20 mile bicycle tour along the Ray Roberts Greenbelt corridor. This rich and diverse area is the home of more than 300 species of plants, including oak woodlands and prairie grasslands. Bring a picnic lunch.

    Horseback Riding, ages, 50+
    Join Black Mustang Ranch on a guided one and a half hour horseback riding adventure on the trails of Jordan State Park. Terrain varies from rugged stony hills to sandy loam. Riders will be matched with an ideal horse based riding skills from beginner to experienced. Water, sunscreen, long pants, and sturdy shoes are required. Dutch-treat lunch after the ride.

  • Health Education Classes
    Matter of Balance
    Conquer the fear of falling and replace that fear with confidence. Join us and learn constructive ideas and techniques. Trained instructors teach these courses that include regular exercise beginning on the third class meeting. Preregistration is required; ages 60+.

    Living with Diabetes | Self-Management
    Dealing with diabetes can be difficult. Enhance your knowledge and empower yourself and others through the nationally recognized Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program. Certified instructors from Texas Health Resources will lead these six-week programs that address the challenges and obstacles in self managing this chronic disease. Preregistration is 
    required; ages 18+.

    For Your Health Seminars
    Professionals will discuss a variety of health-related topics.
    Every third Thursday, 1 to 2 p.m. at Denton Senior Center at American Legion Hall.
    FREE Health Screenings
    Certified RN checks blood pressure and blood sugar.
    Every second Tuesday, 10 a.m. to noon at Denton Senior Center at American Legion Hall.
    FREE Blood Pressure and Sugar Readings
    Every 1st & 3rd Friday, 10 a.m.; provided by Denton Fire Dept.
    Every 2nd & 4th Friday, 10 a.m.; provided by Active Home Health

  • Group Exercise Classes
    Live the good life!
    These on-going classes are offered at Denton Senior Center on Bell Ave.

    Cardio Drumba
    DRUMBA is an exercise format that combines regular or weighted drum sticks with lower body dance steps to create a fast paced, intense workout for both the upper and lower body. DRUMBA can be done seated or standing to provide a fun cardiovascular workout for all abilities. It combines music and fitness in a way beyond your imagination! 

    Tuesdays  |  6-7 p.m.
    $20 per person, per month

    This modified class is specifically designed with less intense moves and a slightly slower beat, but still provides a high cardiovascular workout and strength building for both upper and lower body. DRUMBA can be done seated or standing to provide a fun cardiovascular workout for all abilities!

    Total Fit
    Challenge the body with this class that focuses on cardio endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. Taught intense enough for a teenager, yet tailored to the 50+ exerciser. Modifications and self-pacing are encouraged. 

    Tuesday and Thursday | 7-8 p.m.
    $24 per person, per month

    Tai Chi
    Tai Chi is a martial art that uses slow, fluid movements of the limbs and torso to move energy. Students learn slow motion warm-up, breathing exercises, and 24 basic movements. Benefits include stress reduction, mental awareness, and physical fluidity.

    Zumba Gold®
    Perfect for older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba® class with lower-intensity moves that will get you moving to Latin and international music. This class choreography focuses on the elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance. All dance routines are designed for beginners and older adults who may have limited capabilities. Register for two or more classes and receive 25% off the second class. Eligible Silver & Fit 
    members may attend Zumba Gold classes.

    Senior Yoga
    A more gentle class with a focus on breath work and stretches. Bring and use a mat if you have one or use a provided chair if you need one. Start at your current skill level and develop more skills. The first class of the session is free. Take both Yoga classes each session and receive 25% off each class.

    FREE Stretch ‘n’ Tone
    Specifically designed for seniors to increase strength and mobility. Rec pass required. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at 11 a.m.
  • SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit
    SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit are fitness programs designed specifically for active older adults delivered through a nationwide network of participating insurance plans. To check eligibility, visit www.silversneakers.com and www.silverandfit.com.
    If you are eligible for the SilverSneakers® program through your insurance plan, you are eligible to access the following:
    • NAT water exercise classes, water walking, and lap swimming during open public hours. 
    • Denia Rec Center fitness center and SilverSneakers® specific classes
    • Senior Center fitness center, SilverSneakers® specific classes
    • MLK Jr. Rec Center fitness center 
    • North Lakes Rec Center cardio room, weight room, and SilverSneakers® group exercise

    SilverSneakers® Classic
    Have fun and move to the music with a variety of exercises designed to increase strength, range of movement, and daily living skills. A chair is provided for support if needed. All levels are welcome.

    Every Tuesday and Thursday
    10:35-11:35 a.m. at Denton Senior Center

    SilverSneakers® Yoga
    This class takes you through a series of seated and standing yoga poses to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. A chair is provided for support if needed. Breathing techniques promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

    Every Monday and Wednesday 
    1:30-2:15 p.m. at Denton Senior Center
    If you are eligible for the Silver&Fit through your insurance plan, you are eligible to access the following:
