Neighborhood Planning

The Long Range Planning Section of the Planning Division is responsible for a number of tasks which includes; assisting in implementing the Denton Plan 2030, preparing Small Area Plans and Corridor Plans, processing annexation requests, providing land use, population, and housing data, administering the City's Neighborhood Planning Programs, managing the City's Historic Resources, and participating in updating of the City's development standards.

Guiding Principles

  • Citizens as a valuable resource. Stakeholders should have a voice regarding all development projects and governmental processes. Planning efforts are neighborhood-driven and opportunities exist for all interested persons and groups to express their viewpoints.
  • Identify neighborhood priorities. Along with encouraging a neighborhood website, The City will assist the community in identifying neighborhood priorities and set a feasible timeline to realize the identified priorities based on available city staff, community volunteers, and funding opportunities.
  • Perform asset building initiatives. Build upon the strengths of each organized and/or targeted neighborhood, and where feasible, use specific assets as a neighborhood brand.
  • Establish short-term and long-term goals. Provide assistance to the neighborhood for the purpose of establishing goals, and encourage neighborhoods to balance the importance of a long-term vision with the necessity of identifying realistic short-term implementation actions.
  • Achieve neighborhood cohesiveness and consensus. Strive to achieve consensus through charities and interactive activities. Equip residents with the basis to plan for and address common concerns and opportunities.
  • Coordinate efforts of government, non-profits, and private partners. Facilitate coordination, based on clearly stated neighborhood goals and priorities, among all partners in neighborhood revitalization: community residents, government agencies, non-profit groups, and the private sector
  • Attract synergy and investment to targeted neighborhoods. Improve the allocation of resources by guiding a community-driven investment process.
  • Assist neighborhoods in the planning process. Each neighborhood will receive planning assistance in accordance to its planning needs.

Neighborhood Matching Grant

Does your neighborhood, homeowner, or tenant association have an idea for a project that would improve the overall quality of life in your neighborhood? The newly revised Neighborhood Project Matching Grant may be able to help you and your neighbors bring your idea to life with a reimbursement grant of up to $10,000. The grant matches City and neighborhood resources to complete neighborhood-proposed projects that foster self-help, self-management, and neighborhood pride, as well as enhance and beautify the neighborhood.

Applications are judged on project appropriateness, funding availability, and the ability of the applicant to match the award 100 percent through financial contributions, in-kind donations, or volunteer hours. Qualifying projects must take place within the City of Denton, provide a communal benefit as determined by the Neighborhood Empowerment Grant Advisory Board, and fall within one or more of the following categories: physical improvements; public safety programs or initiatives; cultural, educational, and recreational programs; and neighborhood master plan or comparable studies that focus on enhancing the neighborhood.

The deadline for submitting a Neighborhood Projecting Matching Grant is Dec. 15.

Neighborhood Micro Grant

The Neighborhood Micro Grant is a tool to assists neighborhood associations or groups in hosting meetings or events that will create new associations or increase memberships in the existing organizations.

Micro Grant Guidelines:

  • Neighborhoods are eligible to receive funds up to two times per 12-month period.
  • Funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis until depleted.
  • Receipts for items related solely to the meeting or event must be submitted before micro grant funds will be released as reimbursement.
  • Changes to the application information regarding the date, time, place, and purpose of the event may nullify the micro grant. If changes are necessary, please advise the City Neighborhood Planning Program in advance to ensure that the event still meets the guidelines.
  • A copy of the meeting or event notification to the neighborhood should accompany the receipts.
  • Neighborhood Micro Grant applications should be submitted no later than four weeks prior to the neighborhood event.
  • A City representative must attend the neighborhood meeting or event to provide information and/or a brief presentation about a topic of interest or benefit, such as neighborhood safety or organizing a neighborhood cleanup.
