Denton City Council approved a contract with Clarion Associates to complete a full re-write of the Denton Development Code.
DENTON, TX, January 25, 2017 - In Dec. 2016, the Denton City Council approved a contract with Clarion Associates to complete a full re-write of the Denton Development Code. The City Council and staff heard the citizens and the development community’s concerns, and agreed that the current code was, at times, inefficient and cumbersome to use. “The current Denton Development Code does not lend itself to encouraging development. A new and updated code will benefit staff, the development community, and the citizens of Denton, by providing clear expectations of everyone involved,” said Munal Mauladad, Director of Development Services. The re-write project will include a focus on infill and redevelopment standards and implementation of key policies and strategies from the Denton Plan 2030.
Clarion Associates began their work by hosting kick-off meetings with staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission during the week of Jan. 9. Following the kick-off meetings with staff, Clarion began drafting the new Denton Development Code, with an emphasis on the use of graphics, tables, and charts to more clearly explain zoning and land-use concepts. Each draft, or module, will be developed to include commentary and footnotes that explain changes from current code to the newly-drafted regulations, including rationale behind recommended provisions.
Additional opportunities for input by key stakeholders and the general public will be announced in the coming months. The outreach is intended to encourage public participation throughout the process in a variety of forums, including the City’s website and public meetings. Clarion expects to complete the project by early 2018.
