  • Adapted Rec Programs
    Adapted Rec for the Entire Community
    These classes and events provide individuals with physical and developmental differences a chance to participate in recreation programs with their peers while enhancing their physical, social, and emotional well being. The whole community is invited to join in the fun! For program specific questions, call (940) 349-8287. 

    Zumba Stars, all ages
    This 60 minute, inclusive Zumba class includes cardio dance routines adapted to suit the needs of children with disabilities. Neuro-typical children are encouraged to participate and serve as partners.

    Every Thursday at North Lakes Rec Center
    6-7pm; free with a rec pass.

    Adaptive Game Day, ages 18+
    This instructor led program promotes physical fitness and social development through a variety of games and activities. 

    Every Wednesday, 3:15-4:15 p.m.
    Free with a rec pass at North Lakes Rec Center.

    Lights Out Sensory Rm, ages 18+
    This interactive room stimulates the senses! Black lights, neon carpet, disco lights and lasers will dazzle. Hands on items will provide different textures. and is great for small groups. Join us weekly or call to schedule a private session for your group of any age.

    Every Tuesday at North Lakes Rec Center
    10:15-11:15am; $5 per visit

    Social Connections, ages 18+
    Join us and make new friends while trying new activities. We'll experience bowling, movies, 
    plays, restaurants or just hang out together. Designed for adults with disabilities. $25 per person; North Lakes Rec Center. Dates TBA.
     
    Adaptive Art, ages 18+
    This instructor led program will explore the use and feel of different mediums that stimulate the senses.  We'll work on fine motor skills, create masterpieces, and learn about different artists.

    Every Monday and Thursday at North Lakes Rec Center
    10:15-11:15am; $5 per visit.

    Celebrate the end of summer with a FREE Civic Center Pool party. Come see friends, enjoy food, and play games. This party is open to youth and adults with disabilities and their families.


    Adapted Dances, ages 18+
    Join us the second Friday of each month for a themed dance complete with music, a disco dance floor, food, and a photo booth.

    Denton Civic Center, 6-10 p.m.

    Bring your sweetheart or find one at the semi-formal Valentine dinner and dance. A catered dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and a dance will begin at 7 p.m. that will include light refreshments, DJ, and photo booth. Please purchase dinner and dance tickets in advance to avoid cancelling due to a lack of minimum enrollment.

  • Outdoor Recreation and Education
    Night Hike, ages 8+
    Join Elm Fork Master Naturalist and staff for a program about night sounds followed by a night hike on beautiful Clear Creek Natural Heritage Area trails. Clear Creek is located at 3310 Collins Rd. Register by Wednesday, Oct. 18.

    $8 per person; meet at Clear Creek 
     
    Fly fishing clinic, 8+
    Learn the art of fly fishing with a Texas Parks and Wildlife certified angler from the Dallas Fly Fishers. This clinic covers equipment, basic casting, knot tying, fly tying, fish behavior, aquatic ecosystems and biology. Course completion includes a Texas Parks and Wildlife Basic Fly Fishing Certification and a TPWD Fly Fishing pin. 

    Wear a hat and bring a sack lunch and water on this adventure. Kids, ages 8-11, must be accompanied by a parent.

    Horseback Riding, ages 10+
    Join Black Mustang Ranch on a 90-minute guided horseback adventure on the trails 
    of Jordan State Park. This beautiful varied terrain is the home of more than 300 
    species of plants including, oak woodlands and prairie grasslands. Bring a sack lunch.

    National Archery in the Schools Kids learn the basics of international-style archery on a legal indoor range with a USA Archery and National Archery in Schools Program certified instructor, with plenty of target practice. Archery aids in the development of micro and macro abilities, as well as listening and observation skills. Closed-toe shoes are required. Register by the Friday before each session.

    $40 per month at Denia Rec Center
     
    Beginning Archery, ages 8+
    Kids learn the basics of international-style archery on a legal indoor range with a USA Archery and National Archery in Schools Program certified instructor, with plenty of target practice.     Intro to Archery, ages 10+
    Learn the fundamentals of international style archery with National Archery in School Program and/or USA Archery certified instructor on a legal range.

    Rock The Wall, coed ages 7-15
    In this introductory course to rock climbing, kids will receive one-on-one time with an instructor and learn rock wall safety. Equipment is provided. Register by the Friday before each session.

    Indoor Rock Climbing Wall
    Denia Rec Center's 20-foot wall uses top-rope climbing and offers five courses, each varying in degree of difficulty. With the completion of the annual safety course, guests can access the wall during open hours without requiring staff belay.

    Safety Course: $10 per adult, $5 per kid

  • Kayaking Adventures
    kayak Adventures! 
    No experience is required. All outdoor adventures are led by knowledgeable, ACA-assessed and American Red Cross lifeguard-certified staff. Fees include instruction, equipment, and transportation when applicable.

    Requirements: sunscreen, insect repellent, water, hiking boots, long pants, a hat, and weather-appropriate clothing, including closed-toe shoes that can get wet.No pets allowed. For adventure specific questions, call (940) 349-7784.
     
    Kayaking, ages 5+
    Perfect for Intergenerational Adventures! Join American Canoe Association assessed instructor and American Red Cross lifeguard certified staff on a kayak adventure that tours a beautiful local waterway. 

    The course is open to all skill levels and paddling experience is not required. Bring a sack lunch and a bottle of water. Fee includes transportation, instructors and guides, sit on top kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and kayak instruction. Kids, ages 5-11, must be accompanied 
    by an adult on a tandem kayak; ages 12+ use a single kayak.

    Kayaking, ages 50+
    Join American Canoe Association assessed instructor and lifeguard certified staff on a kayak adventure. Paddling experience is not required. Fee includes transportation, instructors and guides, sit on top kayaks, life jackets, paddles and kayak instruction. Bring sunscreen, sack lunch, and water.

    $20 per person; meet at Denton Senior Center 

     
    Group Kayak Trips
    Connect with qualified staff for a two to three hour adventure on a beautiful local waterway Ideal for youth groups, teen birthday parties, or family reunions. 

    Kids, ages 5-11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult on a tandem kayak. Kids 12+ are welcome to paddle a single kayak. Each trip requires a minimum registration of 10 people. Each adventure starts and ends at Denia Rec Center. Participants of all abilities are welcome.

  • Martial Arts
    TEXAS ISSHINRYU KARATE
    Karate is more than punching and kicking. Age appropriate classes develop character values and skills for success at home, at school, or at work, and in the dojo. Adults also find stress relief and a way to stay young. Classes for the whole family improve focus, confidence, discipline, fitness, and self-defense. With an emphasis on traditional values through the study of traditional martial arts, students improve balance, coordination, and body strength. Students can earn patches, belts, stripes, and other distinctions. First trial class is free.

    Red Tiger Karate
    Red Tiger offers a complete white through black belt program. The junior program develops self-esteem, bully defense, respect for others, and more. Teen and adult classes focus on street self-defense, fitness, and personal development. A white uniform is required and may be purchased in class. For more information, call (817) 845-1557.

  • Dog Obedience
    Family Manners Level I, Dog Obedience Class
    Instructor Angie Dickinson takes you through the step-by-step process of teaching your canine friend commands such as “sit,” “come,” “down,” “wait,” and many more. Ms. Dickinson has over 35 years of dog training experience and is an American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Only one dog handler allowed per household per six week course.   • CPR and Red Cross Training
    Heartsaver® Pediatric
    This course meets the regulatory requirements for child care workers and teaches first aid, CPR, and AED skills. The American Heart Association ebook must be purchased prior to the class at www.ebook.heart.org.

    First Tuesday of each month, 5-7:30 p.m.

    American Red Cross
    Lifeguard Training, Ages 15+

    Course Content: Learn skills needed to prevent and respond to pool and water park emergencies. Prerequisites will be conducted on the first day of class.

    Course Certifications: 
    Waterpark Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Training, Bloodbourne Pathogen Training, Oxygen Administration, First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

    Course Prerequisites: 
    •    Minimum age of 15
    •    Swim 300 yards continuously
    •    Start in the water and swim 20 yards of front crawl or breaststroke, surface return to the starting point with the object, and exit without using a ladder or steps- all within one minute and 40 seconds
    •    Tread water for 2 min. using legs only course dates: Bring a lunch each day

     
    American Red Cross
    Lifeguard Instructor Training, Ages 17+

    Become an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor. Online course work is due prior to Dec. 18. Information will be sent out to all registered participants prior to the first day of training. Bring a lunch each day.

    •    16 years old (by last day of class)
    •    Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4, by swimming 25 yards of each stroke: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly (15 yards)
    •    Float in deep water for one minute
    •    Tread water for one minute
