    These fun programs and activities are very diverse depending on the time of year. We encourage creativity and teach kids to dance, cook, exercise, and much more!

    Free After School Tutoring
    MLK Jr. Rec Center, all grades
    Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-7 p.m.

    Ensure your kid’s success in school and beyond by partnering with the Student in Touch Tutoring Program. There is assistance for homework, computer lab access, sports and fitness, and life skills seminars during the school year.
     
    Kids Rock on Friday Night

    Denton Civic Center, 7-10:30 p.m.
    Grades 1-5; $10 per kids

    Each month, kids can enjoy a night out while parents enjoy the night off. Our experienced staff plan each month around a unique theme, then create play stations that include games and activities, mini-sports tournaments, unique inflatable fun, ping-pong, and video games on a large screen. Of course, it's never a party without a DJ and dance contest!

    No need to buy dinner on the way because we sell concessions, as well as glow products. To make check in fast and not furious, register in advance.

     
  • Adult Programs and Activities
    Our adults rec programs and classes target numerous areas ranging from dancing to defense and are designed to enrich lives and encourage play.

    Family Manners Level I, Dog Obedience Class
    North Lakes Rec Center, ages 12+
    Dogs, ages nine weeks and older

    Over 35 years of experience! This course uses force-free training and is an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Only one dog/handler team allowed per household. Basic commands and many others will be taught. The first class is for humans only, and shot records are required.

    Hypertufa for Ya!
    Denia Rec Center, ages 15+
    Hypertufa is a light weight artificial stone material comprised of several aggregates and mixed with portland cement to create pots, planters, and more. Bring a medium sized item from home to create the mold.

    Aerial Skills Intro, Twisted Bodies™
    Denia Rec Center, ages 17+
    Learn basic skills, safety of aerial silks, how to safely tie footlocks, invert, drop and more. Each class will combine elements of gymnastics and dance with use of the silk to get you off the ground and into the air. Classes taught by Level 1 Certified Aerial Silks instructors and are Born To Fly Certified by the founders and authors of AerialDancing.com.

    Adult Swing Dance 
    MLK Jr. Rec Center, ages 17+
    Learn to Swingout with the Swing Dance Society. It's traditional and energetic!

    Adult Beg. Country Western Dance
    Denia Rec Center, ages 17+
    Learn to Two Step, Waltz, Swing, and more. In Texas everyone needs to know these moves! For couples and singles. 

    Date Night Cooking Class
    MLK Jr. Rec Center, ages 17+
    Couples will learn recipes and create meals from around the world while working together, bonding, and dipping into nutrition education.

    Women’s Self Defense, Level 1
    North Lakes Rec Center, ages 14+
    Level 1 will empower you in both passive and aggressive threats and includes proper striking techniques, kicking tactics, locks, chokes, and restraints. As you improve, advanced topics will be introduced to include defenses against weapons attacks. Please wear light and comfortable clothing.

    Women’s Self Defense, Level 2
    North Lakes Rec Center, ages 14+
    Level 2 covers situational awareness, mindset, avoidance techniques, dirty fighting, and "all-out-whatever-it-takes" scenarios. By the end of this course you will be able to escape from an aggressor in less than five seconds. Long pants and t-shirt required. Knee and elbow pads are preferred.

    Boxing
    MLK Jr. Rec Center, ages 8+
    Designed to teach proper stance, boxing techniques, punching combinations, and more. No physical combat, but uses speed bags and punching bags. Bring boxing gloves, hand wraps, and a speed rope. 

    Heartsaver® Pediatric 
    MLK Jr. Rec Center, ages 12+
    This course meets the regulatory requirements for child care workers and teaches first aid, 
    CPR, and AED skills. The American Heart Association ebook must be purchased prior to class at www.ebook.heart.org.




     
  • Outdoor and Indoor Adventure Programs
    Time for an Adventure! No experience is required.
    All outdoor adventures are led by knowledgeable, ACA-assessed and American Red Cross lifeguard-certified staff. Fees include instruction, equipment, and transportation when applicable.

    Requirements: sunscreen, insect repellent, water, hiking boots, long pants, a hat, and weather-appropriate clothing, including closed-toe shoes that can get wet.No pets allowed. For adventure specific questions, call (940) 349-7784.

    Kayak the Brazos, ages 13+
    Join American Canoe Association assessed and American Red Cross lifeguard certified staff on a two day, overnight, 20 mile paddle down the Brazos River. Fee includes transportation, kayaks and equipment, primitive camping site, trail meals, and more. Mandatory pretrip meeting for all participants and/or legal guardians. Ages 13-16 must be accompanied by an adult. 
    May 6-7; $105 per person. Register HERE.

    Kayaking, ages 5 to adult
    Ages 5-11 must be accompanied by an adult to share a tandem kayak, and ages 13-17 may attend without a guardian but must provide a signed waiver. Meet at Denia Rec Center; bring a sack lunch. All kayaks are sit-on-top. Register by the Wednesday before each trip. Single (ages 12+) and Tandem (age 5+). $20 per person.

    Environmental Perspectives
    Elm Fork Master Naturalists will delight you with their knowledge of the natural world in these informal classes at Denia Rec Center. These classes are free with a rec pass.

  • Adaptive Rec Programs
    Adaptive Rec for the Entire Community
    These classes and events provide individuals with physical and developmental differences a chance to participate in recreation programs with their peers while enhancing their physical, social, and emotional well being. The whole community is invited to join in the fun! For program specific questions, call (940) 349-8287. 

    Zumba Stars, all ages
    This 60 minute, inclusive Zumba class includes cardio dance routines adapted to suit the needs of children with disabilities. Neuro-typical children are encouraged to participate and serve as partners.

    Every Thursday at North Lakes Rec Center
    6-7pm; free with a rec pass.

    Adaptive Dances, ages 18+
    Join us the second Friday of each month for a themed dance complete with music, a disco dance floor, food, and a photo booth.Free with a rec pass at North Lakes Rec Center.

    Adaptive Game Day, ages 18+
    This instructor led program promotes physical fitness and social development through a variety of games and activities. 

    Every Wednesday at North Lakes Rec Center, 3:15-4:15 p.m.; free with a rec pass.

    Lights Out Sensory Rm, ages 18+
    This interactive room stimulates the senses! Black lights, neon carpet, disco lights and lasers will dazzle. Hands on items will provide different textures. and is great for small groups. Join us weekly or call to schedule a private session for your group of any age.

    Every Tuesday at North Lakes Rec Center
    10:15-11:15am; $5 per visit

    Adult Connections, ages 18+
    Join us and make new friends while trying new activities. We'll experience bowling, movies, 
    plays, restaurants or just hang out together. Designed for adults with disabilities. $25 per person; North Lakes Rec Center. Dates TBA.

    Adaptive Art, ages 18+
    This instructor led program will explore the use and feel of different mediums that stimulate the senses.  We'll work on fine motor skills, create masterpieces, and learn about different artists.

    Every Monday and Thursday at North Lakes Rec Center
    10:15-11:15am; $5 per visit.

    Summer Splash Bash
    Friday, Aug 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
    Open to all youth and adults with disabilities. Celebrate the end of summer with a FREE 
    Civic Center Pool party. Come see friends, enjoy food, and play games. This party is open to youth and adults with disabilities and their families.

     
  • Martial Arts
    Texas Isshinryu Karate

    Isshinryu is an authentic martial art stemming from Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. This fun class, taught by world champion and hall-of-fame black belt instructors, focuses on discipline, confidence, coordination, physical fitness, and practical self-defense.

    A white uniform is required and may be purchased in class. $50 per month, but the first trial class is free at Denia Rec Center, (940) 349-8285. 
     

    Red Tiger Karate

    Red Tiger offers a complete white through black belt program. The junior program develops self-esteem, bully defense, respect for others, and more. Teen and adult classes focus on street self-defense, fitness, and personal development. A white uniform is required and may be purchased in class. $60 per session.
