Senior Programs

Denton Parks and Rec offers health, fitness, and recreation programs specifically geared for adults ages 50 and older. We encourage you to explore what we offer and spring into action for a sense of community, fellowship, and fun that goes beyond our centers.

  • Outdoor and Indoor Adventure Recreation
    Outdoor and indoor classes are for adults 50+ unless otherwise noted. These classes are managed by our in-house rec coordinator who specializes in outdoor recreation. If you have adventure specific questions, please call (940) 349-7784. No experience is required.

    Kayaking
    Friday, May 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

    Kayak on a beautiful local waterway with ACA assessed instructors and lifeguard certified staff. Water and weather appropriate clothing, including closed-toe shoes, are recommended. Experience not required. Bring a sack lunch, sunscreen, water, and a folding chair. Equipment provided. $20 per person, per trip.

    Greenbelt Bike Ride
    Saturday, June 3, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

    Join us on a leisurely 6.5 mile, 13 mile, or 20 mile bicycle tour along the Greenbelt Corridor. Bikes, helmets, and transportation are provided. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy afterwards. $20 per person.
     
  • Matter of Balance and Diabetes Classes
    Matter of Balance
    Conquer the fear of falling and replace that fear with confidence. Learn constructive ideas and techniques. Trained instructors will teach these courses that include regular exercise beginning on the third class meeting. Open to ages 60 and older.

    Tuesdays & Thursdays, June 6-29, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

    Living with Diabetes: Diabetes Self-Management
    Dealing with diabetes difficult? Enhance your knowledge and empower yourself and others through the nationally recognized Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program. Certified instructors from Texas Health Resources will lead these six-week programs that address the challenges and obstacles in self managing this chronic disease.

    Taking Control of your Health: Chronic Disease Self-Management
    Dealing with diabetes difficult? Enhance your knowledge and empower yourself and others. This six-week program addresses the challenges and obstacles in self managing chronic disease.

    Tuesdays, May 16 - June 21, 1-3:30 p.m.
    Denton Senior Center
    Free with a rec pass; preregistration is required.
  • Group Exercise Classes
    These on-going classes are offered at Denton Senior Center and can be joined anytime.

    Senior Yoga
    This class regulates the body’s energy level, centers the mind, and relaxes the muscles. Take both the Tuesday and Thursday classes to receive a 25% discount on each class. $30 per session; Tuesdays or Thursdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Next session begins April 11 and 13.

    Evening Yoga
    Studies have shown that yoga can be extremely helpful in to combating stress, fatigue and pain. Some yoga poses increase core strength and balance, which reduces the risk of fall-related injuries, and other poses help alleviate senior-related health issues. Above all, yoga is a form of exercise that can help seniors feel younger. Learn some simple yoga poses that can improve your overall quality of life.

    Register for two out of three yoga classes and receive a 25% discount on each class. $30 per session; Wednesdays, 5:45-6:45 p.m. Next session begins April 12.

    Tai Chi
    This class is designed to improve breathing, blood pressure, and other medical conditions through ancient relaxation techniques. $30 per session; Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m. Next session begins April 4.

    Total Fit
    With seniors in mind, this class has strength training and flexibility exercises for a total body, total fitness workout. $24 per session; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. Next session begins April 4.

    Zumba® GOLD PM
    This low-impact class, led by a certified Zumba Gold® instructor, is designed for seniors and modifies the moves and pace of classic Zumba®.

    Eligible Silver&Fit members may attend. 25% discount if registered for both classes. $30 per session; Mondays, 6-7 p.m. or Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Next session begins March 20.

    Zumba® GOLD AM 
    Although geared towards adults ages 50 and older, this class is not heavily modified. Eligible Silver&Fit members may attend. $20 per session; Thursdays, 9-10 a.m. Next session begins April 6. No classes in July and August.

    Stretch ‘n’ Tone
    Specifically designed for seniors to increase strength and mobility. Free with arec pass. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11 a.m.
